Children have a place in this world. Their first obligation is to fulfill the requirements for literacy and preparation for their future, and to be the source of pride for their family and community. Only then can they demand a place at the table with the elders.
However, when they make that transition and become thinking and independent adults, it is imperative that the elders give them a place at the table. It is also important that the elders teach them the mandates for sitting at the table with the rest of humanity as culturally conscious people. This requires that the elders teach them the truth about their cultural traditions and refrain from feeding them intangible hogwash stemming from the backwoods of someone else’s boondoggle. It demeans their self esteem and minimizes their relevance.
Truth is that when children find out that the elders have lied to them…they may lose respect for the elders. Age does not guarantee a place at the table…you earn it…young and old!
